for everyone
Category:Restaurants
Cuisine: Thai
Location:5921 Alger Street, Poblacion, Makati
Abet's afternoon classes in Colegio San Agustin in Dasmariñas Village were cancelled, and I just came from a doctor's appointment at Valero St. We were both in Makati at lunchtime, we both have the afternoon off, we're feeling cheap, and I've been seriously craving for Thai food for two days now (thanks to Gino's pictures of his recent Thailand trip). There couldn't have been a better day than today to check out Som's, a hole-in-the-wall restaurant near Rockwell. I've read so much about it--both raves and rants--it was about time I checked it out for myself. This eatery has been featured in the book Manila's Best-Kept Restaurant Secrets, and I'd like to be in on this.

My verdict: the food is G-O-O-D! The authenticity of the food at Som's is being debated, but until I experience dining at a hawker stall in Bangkok, I won't care. Ioved the bagoong rice, and Abet was happy with his red chicken curry, although it wasn't as hot as he'd like.

I badly missed the Tom Yam (hot and sour prawn soup) at the Thai canteen in Balara just outside the UP campus (is that canteen still open?), so we ordered a bowl (good for 2-3 persons). It wasn't at par with the Tom Yam at the Thai canteen in UP, but it was good nonetheless.

Tom Yam

Abet was a Thai food virgin and I was thinking about introducing him to Pad Thai, but I wasn't in a noodle mood. We settled instead for the catfish salad, one of Som's bestsellers.

What I think is the ultimate winner in Som's menu would be their Thai milk tea. I have a strong feeling that I'll be craving for this a lot. I regret not getting several bottles to take home.

Som's is a no-frills, value-for-money place you can go to whenever you're craving for cheap Thai food. Like most dining establishments that maintain low prices, ambiance is compromised. Get past the few flies and you will be rewarded with a pleasant gastronomical experience.

I told'ja, I told'ja! Remember my post earlier this year or was that late last year? You didn't wanna try this 'coz of Oodies or some other resto.

The best yung Chicken Curry nila. There were times that I've over ordered and brought home some of the sauce, and mixed it with newly cooked fried chicken and other stuff.. Superb pa rin kahit painit na.

Plus, wala pa kong dinalhan nito na mahilig sa maanghang at di nasarapan. :)

Rating 'em 5 for reasonable prices that can really fill ya. :) 1-2 dishes, solb for the average appetite.

Oh, they have a branch beside Mcdo, Tomas Morato.

The pressure was too much, I had to try it already! Haha!

Yep, that was Oody's that turned me off. Som's is nothing like Oody's, thank God. My boyfriend loves spicy food, so this was a hit. :D He wants to try all of the curry dishes.

Good that there's another branch, better access to the milk tea!

Aaaaaargh, miss ko na rin yan! Pero ang layo ng Mister Kabab sa akin, tiyaga muna ako sa Yakult, haha!

Hay naku, MJ, puro pagkain na naman tayo! Aren't we supposed to be on a diet??? ;-)

Hehe! Oody's there you go.

Next thing he has to try is the Spicy Beef in Basil Rice (not sure, basta spicy basil rice and its topped by fried egg). For the garlic lovers, yung garlic beef. I haven't ventured into anything else 'coz we are satisfied with their two beef dishes and the Red Curry.. The green and yellow curries are just milder, if not sweeter versions of the Red. I have yet to try the Tom Yam and their chicken pandan.

Never have I walked from Som's that I didn't feel bloated. Was just there Thursday night. Haha.

if you live in qc dea, there's a soms sa tabi ng house ko sa morato. :) it's beside the big mcdonald's along tomas morato. i eat there at least once a week. yep, i love their bagoong rice and spring rolls....of course, i always order the milk tea. panalo! value for your money talaga!
Wow, once a week? Addict, haha! Inggit ako, that means you get to have the milk tea often!

I'm a Southerner, but I'll probably be dropping by if I'm in the area, if only to buy bottles of the tea. ;-)

Is this Som's commutable? How do you get there from the MRT station? Mura lang ba dun? Hehehe

Pagbaba ng Guadalupe station, ride the Taft/Herran/Bukid jeep to Rockwell (easier to ride from the Northbound side--dun sa may Jollibee, but pwede din sa kabila). Lalakarin mo pa, though--you'd have to walk the entire length of Rockwell Drive towards Kalayaan. SOM's is on Algier, the street 'ober da bakod' on the right side of Rockwell Drive, tanaw mo na yung SOM's sa kabila ng steel gate.

Food is relatively cheap, around P100 per dish, some are for sharing na.

Nag Som's kami kagabi sa Tomas Morato... Eh... I ordered Pad Thai and papaya salad. The papaya salad wasn't good and gave me raw garlic breath. They're all more expensive, considering their serving sizes. Pero masarap milk tea sa Som's! Baka nagkataon lang sa inorder ko.

Ay. that's sad... Honestly, I don't know how pad thai is supposed to taste, hehe. Buti na rin siguro that we didn't get that. Maybe their specialties are their meat dishes, those we tried didn't disappoint. Pero sarap nga ng milk tea, no? Pwede nang dessert!
onigasim wrote on Mar 9, '08
I think they use vinegar instead of tamarind for the pad thai. Pwede nga pang dessert milk tea nila!
